What is an inverter?
An inverter is an electronic device that converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). While many renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, produce direct current, typical electrical installations such as homes and businesses use alternating current. By converting between these two types of current, inverters convert the direct current from the solar panel into usable alternating current.
Inverters come in many different types and are designed for specific applications. For example, there are inverters for home solar systems designed for in-home use. More powerful inverters are available for large-scale commercial or industrial applications.
Inverters can also perform functions such as feeding energy back into the electrical grid (net metering). This allows homeowners to sell the excess energy they produce to the electrical grid or to obtain balanced energy consumption by purchasing electricity from the grid later when they need it.
